Raw, whole foods:
The best choices for parrot diets
Raw whole foods are generally best for parrots because they closely match what parrots would eat in the wild—fresh, unprocessed, and nutritionally intact.
Here's why that matters:
1 Maximum nutrient content
Cooking and processing can destroy or reduce important vitamins (like vitamin C and some B vitamins). Raw fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts keep their full nutritional value, which supports a parrot's immune system, feathers, and overall health.
2 Better digestion
Parrots are adapted to eat fresh plant matter. Whole foods contain natural enzymes and fiber that help with digestion and gut health. Highly processed pellets and cooked foods can be harder for them to break down.
3 Natural hydration
Fresh foods (like fruits and veggies) have high water content. This helps keep parrots hydrated without relying only on drinking water.
4 Mental stimulation and enrichment
Whole foods require parrots to chew, tear, and manipulate—just like foraging in the wild. This keeps their beaks healthy and prevents boredom and behavioral issues (like feather plucking).
5 No additives or harmful ingredients
Processed foods can contain salt, sugar, preservatives, or artificial ingredients that are harmful to parrots. Raw whole foods are clean and simple.
6 Supports long-term health
A diet rich in fresh vegetables, some fruits, soaked and sprouted items, and healthy seeds/tree nuts is linked to better skin and feather quality, stronger immune function, and lower risk of obesity and fatty liver disease.

Feed Your Parrot
Fresh, Whole Foods!
Worried about leaving fresh foods out for your birds each day?
Science says don’t be!
Fresh fruits, vegetables, and sprouts spoil gradually over days—not hours.
1. Shelf life is the time period when fresh produce remains safe/acceptable.
Spoilage is a gradual process as microbes and enzymes accumulate.
Postharvest biology and technology: Postharvest Shelf Life of Fresh Produce, 2023
2. Fresh produce spoils due to delayed ripening and microbial growth over time, not immediate contamination.
Horticulturae: Plant–Microbe Interactionions Review, 2024
3. Spoilage of fruits, vegetables, and sprouts is linked to gradual change in microbial activity, not sudden spoilage.
Frontiers in Microbiology: Linking Microbial Contamination to Spoilage, 2023
4. Microbial spoilage is a progressive process influenced by factors like temperature, pH, moisture, not an instant hazard.
Heliyon: Food Spoilage Mechanisms Review, 2024
5. Produce safety and quality can be modeled over days based on gradual microbial growth.

FRESH FOODS DO NOT SPOIL WITHIN HOURS!
Someone sent me a video today of a young lady complaining that she didn’t have time to feed whole foods to birds because she didn’t have the time and they would go bad quickly.
This video was filled with misinformation and a significant lack of understanding regarding avian nutrition, including that pellets are a superior diet because they were “made by vets.”
Sadly, this is the norm and the result of ongoing propaganda from pet food manufacturers that I’ve been fighting for years.
The science speaks for itself, but I wanted to say this as plainly as possible:
NOTHING BEATS THE NUTRITION IN WHOLE FOODS.
I’ll never understand how our extensive scientific knowledge of fresh whole foods could be twisted into fear mongering and a push for a diet made of mostly ultra processed pellets.
This makes no sense!
Just some “food” for thought for everyone!
