This is a mix of 8 varieties of shell-free nuts that are safe for birds to eat.

  • No peanuts
  • 100% raw nuts
  • Even small parrots benefit from an appropriate amount of nuts

These nuts are certified organic by CCOF (California USDA Organic) for human consumption. Only products grown in soil free of prohibited substances for at least three years prior to harvest can be labeled organic.

No salt, preservatives, antioxidants, or artificial flavorings are added—just 100% natural ingredients.

Mix them into daily meals, sprinkle on salads, or use them for foraging enrichment. Nuts are essential for birds because their high resting metabolic rate requires fats as a vital energy source.

Imported organic raw nuts are used. As an 8-nut mix, the price is reasonably set in line with the market.

Product Overview

Species

Safe for finches, small parrots, medium parrots, and large parrots. (Suitability for lorikeets is not confirmed.)

Some small animals other than birds may also be given these nuts, but please use your discretion as the owner.

Daily feeding is especially recommended for large parrots.
For Hyacinth Macaws, daily feeding of macadamia nuts is strongly recommended.

Feeding Instructions

For a whole-food-based diet, we recommend feeding this product at 10–15% of the total diet.

It can be offered raw, but some nuts are easier to digest if soaked in water for several hours (“soaked nuts”). Soaking helps reduce phytic acid and other anti-nutrients, improving absorption and making it gentler on birds with sensitive digestion.

Please mix all of the ingredients from the Diet Ratio Chart and feed according to the Recommended Feeding Amounts below:

  • Small parrots: 1 tablespoon
  • Medium parrots: 2–3 tablespoons
  • Large parrots: 3–4 tablespoons

These amounts are designed so that the portion given = the portion eaten. If your bird finishes the portion quickly, observe and add a little more as needed. While some guidelines suggest “10% of body weight,” we do not recommend this as the best approach.

The Diet Ratio Chart and Feeding Guidelines were developed by Biodiversity Bird Blends (avian biologists and avian veterinarians). This feeding method is considered optimal for companion birds, and we encourage owners to adjust their birds’ diet accordingly.

The misconception: “Nuts are too fatty and cause obesity”
This is a common concern, but birds have a high resting metabolic rate, meaning the fats from nuts alone do not cause obesity. In the past, even in the U.S., veterinarians and pet shops often advised limiting nuts. However, as nutritional science has advanced, fewer professionals now discourage nuts.

When fed in moderation, nuts are an essential food for birds. If you are worried, adjust by offering them less frequently (e.g., once every few days). For medium and large parrots, daily feeding is recommended.

What are Whole Foods?

In bird nutrition, “whole foods” are ingredients that wild birds could obtain in nature—fresh vegetables and fruits, seeds, nuts, herbs, coconut, edible flowers, insects, and items that are soaked or sprouted. In short, foods you can recognize at a glance.

With the exception of processed products such as pellets, supplements, and bird cookies, most of these are considered whole foods. (Seeds count as whole foods, too.)

FAQ

Q: Do nuts make birds gain weight?
A: No. In sensible portions, nut fats won’t make your bird overweight. Parrots have a relatively high resting metabolic rate, and current nutrition guidance in the U.S. has moved away from the old “avoid nuts” advice. Nuts can be an important part of the diet when fed appropriately. If you’re concerned, reduce the frequency (e.g., every few days) and adjust based on your bird’s condition. For medium- and large-sized parrots, daily nuts in moderation are fine. For details, please see our seminar.

Q: Can I heat nuts (roast/toast) before feeding?
A: We don’t recommend roasted or otherwise heated nuts. Offer them as is or soaked. Soaking is our preferred method.

Q: Why aren’t peanuts included?
A: Peanuts aren’t appropriate for parrots, and they’re legumes, not tree nuts. Raw legumes are not suitable for birds, and peanuts carry additional drawbacks. We recommend not feeding peanuts.

Q: Do you carry in-shell nuts?
A: Sorry, no. Due to import regulations, we’re unable to offer in-shell nuts.

Caution

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets maximum permissible levels of insect fragments in foods. These levels vary depending on the type of food and the manufacturing process. Since this product is pesticide-free and additive-free, the possibility of insects being present cannot be completely ruled out. Insects attached to nuts are considered a source of animal protein and are not harmful to birds; however, if you are concerned, please remove them before feeding. Please note that returns or exchanges cannot be accepted due to the presence of insects.
