Setting a Higher Standard
Lories and lorikeets have some of the most specialized nutritional requirements in the avian world. Their nectar-based diet, rapid metabolism, and unique digestive physiology require nutrition formulated specifically for their biology—not adapted from generic parrot diets.
At Lories Choice, we believe premium nutrition should be defined by science, not shortcuts. That’s why our formulas were developed through the combined expertise of professional aviculturists and an avian nutritionist, bringing together decades of hands-on experience and evidence-based nutritional science. Every ingredient is carefully selected, every nutrient has a purpose, and every formula is designed specifically for the unique needs of lories and lorikeets.
Others measure themselves against industry standards. We measure ourselves against what’s best for lories and lorikeets. That philosophy drives every decision we make—from ingredient selection and formulation to quality assurance and continuous improvement. We don’t strive to simply meet expectations; we strive to raise the standard for species-specific nutrition.
Our formulas are made with carefully selected human-grade ingredients and feature premium protein sources, balanced carbohydrates, essential vitamins and minerals, stabilized vitamin C, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and highly bioavailable chelated trace minerals. A controlled iron formulation is designed specifically for the nutritional needs of nectar-feeding parrots, providing complete daily nutrition in a smooth, easy-to-mix nectar.
To ensure our commitment to quality continues beyond formulation, Lories Choice conducts annual nutritional analysis to verify our formulas continue to meet the standards we’ve established for consistency, quality, and nutritional integrity.

Our Diets
Made to order fresh batches, one year shelf life, and made with the best ingredients!
We utilize environmentally friendly ingredients in our products. Green banana flour, our second ingredient, is an excellent source of prebiotic fiber. Formulated for optimum nutrition, our diets are beta-carotene-rich for healthy beak and feather color.
Our coconut palm sugar is sourced from Indonesia, home to numerous Lory species in their natural habitat. Harvested from the nectar of coconut palm blossoms, “Nira,” it is rich in amino acids and contains other essential vitamins and minerals.
In addition to these improvements, we have reduced the soy content and increased the pea protein content. Pea protein supports muscle, skin, and feather health. In collaboration with Dr. Jason Crean, Avian Nutrition Consultant, we've also added organic decaffeinated black tea! All of our formulas are human-grade, and we prioritize quality control through annual laboratory testing. All Lory foods have iron as do some of the other fresh foods lories should be eating. This coupled with Vitamin C that speeds iron uptake makes the tannins in the tea beneficial for all iron sensitive species.
Synopsis
Lories & Lorikeets in the wild feed primarily on Nectar, fruit and pollen. Their digestive systems are different from other parrot species, in that they are short and have fast transit times to excrete projectile droppings. These birds are equipped with brush like fibers located at the tip of their tongue, which they use to gather contents. They have also been noted to consume some insects and vegetable matter.
Our Diets
So little is known about everything these nectar eating parrots consume in the wild. Our diets are based on what we do know how these birds should be fed. We carefully chose ingredients we know to be beneficial to their health, and that are based off of crop contents found in wild birds. Unlike other commercial nectar formulas, we added more enrichment items to peak your birds interest, while maintaining safe iron levels.
Flower petals, fruit bits, leaves/stems! Our cuisine diet also contains coconut palm sugar! Coconut palm sugar is a super food loaded with vitamins. It is also low glycemic. Many lory species feed on coconut palm shoots in the wild, feeding on the nectar and pollen.
Lories require a high moisture diet, and we always recommend feeding a wet diet, versus a complete dry diet or pellet diets. All of our ingredients are sourced from reliable suppliers, and are human grade.
Jordan Daniel Berber
Twelve years ago, I fell head over heels in love with Lories, also known as Lorikeets! I eagerly purchased my first pair of Rainbows from a breeder who was selling his last two pairs.
However, I must admit that I had done minimal research on their dietary and husbandry requirements, leaving me somewhat unprepared to provide them with the appropriate diet.
I was completely unaware of the immense challenge of sourcing a high-quality food source. I made several calls to various retail stores in my area at the time, only to discover that most of them exclusively carried colored pellets, which I was informed were the standard food for these birds.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
Over the past 12 years, I have meticulously built my collection of lories and learned everything I could from my esteemed colleague and mentor, the last largest lory breeder in the country.
A crucial aspect of ensuring lories’ happiness and well-being lies in providing them with a nutritious diet. Lories thrive best on a wet nectar diet, supplemented with low-iron, safe fruits, and some vegetables.
Since many companies promote diets that compromise on quality, offering marketing gimmicks that claim customers can feed pellets or an all-dry diet, resulting in less mess, I decided to provide high-quality products.
With the help of my mentor, in 2022 we formulated our nectar diets that derive from her base recipe that have been used for over three decades. I also implemented other nutritionally sounds ingredients, based on what other Lory keepers used in their own diets.
With a limited selection of high-quality commercial lory food available on the market today, my primary objective is to contribute to the preservation and conservation of these magnificent birds.
Many lory species are now rare, both in captivity and in the wild. Providing them with a nutritious diet is crucial for their survival and can help prevent their extinction in the United States.
I am proud to offer such high-quality diets to pet homes, rescues, retailers, zoos, and exhibits!
Diet Myths
Our company believes in feeding Lories/Lorikeets correctly.
We have acquired many birds that were fed insufficient diets. Correcting these abnormalities take time. Below are some examples of our findings.
Pellets vs. Nectar/Powder
Some companies push an all pellet, or all dry powder diet for Lories/Lorikeets. It is a marketing gimmick to convince the customer these will "lessen" the mess they make, as a selling point. This actually does more harm than good. By nature, lories were designed to consume nectar, with brush like fibers at the tip of their tongue to gather from flowers and palm shoots. This is also why they have projectile droppings. When fed pellets or an all dry powder diet, they cannot flush down the contents through their digestive tract correctly, and in some cases causing impaction.
What is the Correct Diet?
Lories will thrive longer on a wet nectar diet. Although our company also offers a dry powder mix, we always recommend only feeding the dry powder sprinkled into a fruit mix or "chop". Companies which claim to have formulas that are "complete" are far from. Lories as well as other parrot species do not have complete diets in the wild.
FAQ's
We're here to help! Below you will find some of our most frequently asked questions. Whether you are a new customer or existing customer, please read below. Any questions recieved that are already answered, will be linked back to this page. Should you have questions that are unanswered here, please reach out to us with the email provided to you below.
“What is the best way to feed my Lory? I was told they can have pellets or all dry powder food.”
Answer: Lories require a high-moisture diet. Because their digestive system is different from other parrot species. Lories have a short digestive tract, so they metabolize food rather quickly. In nature, they primarily feed on nectar, vegetable matter, pollen, grubs, and fruit. A wet nectar diet, healthy fruits (low iron/vitamin C), will allow them to process and digest food easier. Some sweet-tasting vegetables such as butternut squash, carrot, and bell pepper can be implemented. These are also rich in beta carotene and natural Vitamin A, which the birds require to look good! Pelleted diets or all dry powder diets can cause many health problems down the road such as impaction or liver and kidney damage. Don’t fall for the marketing gimmicks given by other companies. Cutting corners for “convenience” should never be a reason to do so.
“What product should I choose? The Lory Maintenance Diet, or the Lory Cuisine Diet?
Answer: You can choose both! Our Lory Maintenance Diet is your bird’s daily staple diet. Our Lory Cuisine formula is an enrichment-based diet, with more diverse ingredients. The Lory Cuisine Diet includes coconut palm sugar, fruit bits, leaf and stem bits, and flower petals. We recommend alternating between both formulas to keep your bird(s) engaged in foraging activity. Or, you can simply implement our Lory Cuisine Diet on days you do not want to implement fresh fruit.
“ You use pea protein in your formulas. I was told this was bad and causes hemochromatosis from high iron.”
Answer: This is a false statement. The concern rises from the iron content found in pea protein. While high in iron, we carefully selected the amount used in our formulas to maintain safe iron levels. Pea protein has many health benefits: promotes muscle growth, healthy skin and feathers, vitamins/minerals, is easily digestible, and prevents blood sugar spikes. Other Lory food companies have over 100-125 PPM iron content in their food. Our recent 2025 lab testing showed 71-79 PPM in our formulas. You can find our full analysis on our product pages.
“ Does the use of coconut palm sugar in your formulas contribute to deforestation?”
Answer: No! Our coconut palm sugar is environmentally sustainable and minimally processed. The palm sugar we use is harvested from the nectar of the coconut palm blossom. This is also known as “Nira” by locals in Indonesia where it is sourced by our brand. Our source uses regenerative agriculture to restore soils, and protects the natural environment. Many Lory species feed on the nectar “Nira” from coconut palm blossoms in the wild. It’s rich in amino acids, and other essential vitamins and minerals. Many believe it is a key ingredient when keeping/breeding Lories & Lorikeets.
“What is the difference between your wet mix (add water) formula and your “feed dry” formula?”
Answer: Nutritionally, both formulas are the same and they are both packaged in a powder form. The only difference between the two, is we use a thickening agent in our “add water”
Mix. This helps keep the contents from settling quickly to the bottom of the feeding dish when mixed with water. As previously stated, we recommend feeding wet nectar mix vs. dry food. Understand that wet mix needs changed frequently to prevent spoilage, so we recommend feeding your bird(s) in portions of what they will consume in 3-4 hrs. We still offer a dry powder formula for customers, but only recommend using it as a supplement or in conjunction with fruit for moisture. Clean drinking water should always be available when using dry powder.
“Can I feed wet nectar mix and dry powder at the same time?”
Answer: Although you can offer both to your bird(s), you’ll find that feeding both simultaneously will result in a lot of wasted product. This may be ideal should you be gone all day for work, however we recommend feeding roughly 1/2 a cup of dry powder in conjunction with chopped or whole fruit for moisture. Make sure clean drinking water is available. Once you return, you can mix up wet nectar mix for their last meal of the day. If you cannot feed wet nectar mix throughout the day, the birds should absolutely be getting it at minimum, once per day.
“How often should I feed fruit?”
Answer: Ideally you can offer fresh fruit to your birds daily, or sporadically. Fresh fruit is considered an enrichment item. Keeping the birds engaged and busy, mimics what they do in the wild, which is called “foraging”. On days you implement fruit, it can either be made up into a puree with our nectar formula, or a nectar meal replacement. To avoid wasted food, only feed fresh, whole/chopped fruit as a nectar meal replacement in the PM hours, after they have had their first nectar meal of the day in the AM hours. Lories by nature gorge on food first thing in the morning, rest mid day, and then forage and eat again before dusk.
“Do you wholesale to retailers?”
Answer: Absolutely! We wholesale to licensed retailers within the country. We’ve also sold internationally to retailers outside of the country. Shipping is an additional cost and prices for shipping vary. For more information on our wholesale prices, please reach out to us via email at lorieschoice@gmail.com.

Reviews from Japan
We received some feedback from Japanese customers. These are their honest impressions, and we hope you find them helpful!
Appearance: Similar to Blessing.
Aroma: Just as fragrant as Psittacus, but Lories Choice has more of a floral scent.
Taste: Similar to Blessing, but sweeter than Versele-Laga.
When I first opened Lories Choice and smelled and tasted it, I honestly thought my bird might not eat it. But the moment I offered it, my bird started eating it right away on the very first try! They examined it closely while eating, which really surprised me.
With foods from other brands, my bird may take one bite but refuse a second, or even shake their head right after the first bite 😂 But with Lories Choice, they immediately went back for a second bite—and happily ate it again the next day. I was amazed! ✨
The first thing that surprised me was the aroma! The moment I opened the package, a beautiful floral scent filled the air—it was almost like burying your face in a bouquet of flowers ✨✨
That alone made it smell delicious, but what surprised me even more was how eagerly my bird ate it! I offered it to my Rainbow Lorikeet, and they started eating right away. Their pupils pinned as they became completely absorbed in the food, and I was amazed by how much they enjoyed it.
I think this is such an appealing food, and I’d definitely love to make it part of our regular feeding routine 😊❣️
