Soaking grains and seeds for birds is not yet very common in Japan, but it is highly recommended.
Compared to feeding seeds dry, soaking improves digestion and nutrient absorption. If birds get used to it while they are adults, they can continue to enjoy soft, easy-to-digest seeds even in their senior years.

This blend contains 13 carefully selected seeds recommended for birds.
All seeds are USDA-certified organic and non-GMO.
It supports daily health and provides a safe, long-term dietary habit you can trust.

Because this product is imported directly from the United States, prices may vary depending on exchange rates and international shipping costs.

Product Overview

What is “Soak”?

“Soak” means “to soak in water.” In other words, soak seeds are seeds that have been soaked in water.

Why do we recommend it?

  • Soaking softens the seeds, making them easier to digest than when fed dry.

  • It can reduce antinutrients such as phytic acid, which helps the body absorb certain nutrients more easily.

  • If birds get used to soaked seeds while they are healthy adults, they can enjoy a wider range of foods in their senior years, including soft, stomach-friendly seeds. It’s also recommended for young birds.

Palatability
Acceptance varies by individual, but we’ve received many reports that birds will start eating soaked seeds when they are offered consistently. Birds often need time to recognize new items as “food,” so introduce them gradually and patiently.

About the Seeds

① This product is designed not as ordinary dry bird seed, but as a feed that requires a little extra care for your birds.

② All seeds are USDA-certified organic, Non-GMO, and sold as human-grade food.

③ In compliance with FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act, USA), the seeds have passed safety testing for common foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria.

④ In addition, the seeds have been inspected by the USDA for plant pests, and official documentation has been issued to certify that they are free from harmful pests.

⑤ All seeds have passed testing for germination viability (ability to sprout).

⑥ Once a year, the manufacturer tests the seeds to confirm that their germination rate remains intact. Only seeds that pass this test (with an official germination report) are used.

⑦ Only seeds that comply with the Federal Seed Act regulations are included in this blend.

These are the key features published by our seed supplier, True Leaf Market. A detailed introduction article about True Leaf Market is currently being prepared.

Parrot Species

This product can be given to a wide range of birds, including finches, small, medium, and large parrots, as well as pigeons.
It is suitable for birds from weaned juveniles to seniors.
Not recommended for lories/lorikeets.
It may also be offered to other small animals, but please check the ingredients and use your discretion as the owner.

What Are Whole Foods?

In bird nutrition, “whole foods” are ingredients that wild birds could obtain in nature—fresh vegetables and fruits, seeds, nuts, herbs, coconut, edible flowers, insects, and items that are soaked or sprouted. In short, foods you can recognize at a glance.

With the exception of processed products such as pellets, supplements, and bird cookies, most of these are considered whole foods. (Seeds count as whole foods, too.)

Feeding Instructions

[How to feed]

We recommend soaking the seeds and draining the water before feeding.
If your bird dislikes wet seeds, you can soak them first and then gently pat them dry with a paper towel before serving.

As a guideline, we suggest offering soaked seeds in the morning, and dry seeds (without moisture) in the evening.

[How to Prepare]

  1. Place the seeds in a container, rinse lightly with water to remove dust or debris, and drain.

  2. Add clean water to a clean container and soak the seeds for about 4–8 hours (maximum 12 hours).

  3. After soaking, discard the water, rinse well under running water, drain thoroughly, and then serve.

There are many preparation tutorials on YouTube and other websites, so please choose the method you prefer.

Daily feeding is recommended, but please do not feed this alone.
Always provide a variety of whole foods as well—vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, herbs, mealworms, coconut, and other natural foods.

Feeding Amount

We recommend 10–15% of the total daily diet (see top right of the chart).
For birds whose main diet is seeds, please feed their usual daily amount.
This blend can be offered every day.

Store at room temperature, away from heat and humidity. Once opened, use promptly; reseal the zipper closure tightly or transfer to an airtight container. For reference, our team keeps them in airtight jars from IKEA.

FAQ

Q: Why is this recommended?
A: In the wild, birds rarely eat dry seeds. They mostly eat seeds, grasses, and roots that contain some moisture (see reference). By soaking seeds, you can offer food in a state closer to what wild birds naturally eat.
From a nutritional standpoint, soaking seeds softens them, making them easier to digest than when dry. Soaking also reduces antinutritional factors such as phytic acid, allowing certain nutrients to be more easily absorbed by the body.
Getting your bird accustomed to soaked food while it’s healthy will help expand its diet later in life and make feeding easier on the stomach. It’s also recommended for chicks and birds with sensitive digestion.

Q: I’ve heard soaked seeds spoil quickly, so should they be discarded right away?
A: Not necessarily. They can be left in the feeding dish for about 8–12 hours without issue. While concerns about bacterial growth or spoilage are common, it’s rare for seeds to spoil or develop harmful bacteria in just half a day. If you’re worried, you can discard them after about 6 hours.

Q: I accidentally soaked the seeds for more than 12 hours. Should I throw them away?
A: No, it’s fine even if you went a little over 12 hours. While we recommend within 12 hours, a slight delay is not a problem. If you notice a bad smell, please discard them.

Q: Some seeds have sprouted—are they still okay to feed?
A: Yes, absolutely. That simply means the seeds have moved on to the next stage, called “sprouting,” which is also perfectly safe and nutritious to feed.

Q: The seeds become slimy very quickly.
A: That’s normal. The blend contains seeds high in polysaccharides, which create a natural gel-like texture when soaked in water—similar to okra or chia seeds. This isn’t spoilage but a natural property of the seeds, and it’s safe. Since our blend includes such seeds, simply rinse them well with water before serving.

Q: Is this product meant only for soaking? Is it okay to feed it dry?
A: Feeding it dry occasionally is fine. However, this mix is formulated to be served soaked, not eaten dry. Soaking makes it easier to digest and more beneficial for your bird’s health, so we recommend serving it soaked whenever possible. If you’re serving it soaked, we recommend feeding it daily in an appropriate amount.

Caution

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets maximum “defect action levels” for incidental insect matter, and those limits vary by food type and manufacturing process. Because this product uses pesticide-free ingredients and contains no additives, incidental insects may occasionally be present. Insects associated with produce or herbs (i.e., whole foods) are a natural source of animal protein and are generally not harmful to birds; however, please remove them if you prefer. Returns or exchanges cannot be accepted for issues related to incidental insects.
