FAQ
Do You Ship Internationally? How Much Is Shipping?
Yes. We ship to most countries worldwide.
If you can enter your shipping address and proceed to checkout, we can generally ship to your location.
Shipping costs are calculated automatically at checkout and added to your order total.
If your country is not currently available at checkout, please feel free to contact us. In some cases, we may still be able to arrange international shipping.
Please note that import regulations vary by country and, in some cases, by product ingredients. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm that the products can be legally imported into the destination country before placing an order.
If required, we can provide commonly requested documents, such as information about the manufacturing process or the country of origin. Please let us know after placing your order if you need these documents.
Beyond providing these documents, we are unable to assist with your country's import procedures.
If your shipment is delayed, held, refused, or destroyed by customs due to local import regulations, we are unable to offer refunds or accept responsibility for any resulting costs or losses.
By placing an order, you acknowledge and accept these terms.
Where Do Orders Ship From?
At this time, all orders are shipped from our warehouse in Japan.
Shipping: Delivery Times & Shipping Costs
Delivery times vary depending on your location.
Orders within Japan are shipped via Sagawa Express and typically arrive within 1–4 business days. International orders generally arrive within 7–16 business days. Please note that we do not ship on weekends.
If you would like to request a specific delivery date or time, please leave a note when placing your order.
Shipping costs are calculated automatically at checkout and added to your order total. Simply add your desired items to your cart and proceed to checkout to view the shipping cost.
Alternative shipping options were discontinued in the spring of 2025. As a general rule, we ship only via our standard courier service.
If you require a different shipping method, please contact us before placing your order. In some cases, we may be able to accommodate your request. Please note that an additional service fee will apply, and delivery may take an additional 7–10 business days.
This is because our fulfillment operations are fully outsourced to a third-party warehouse that ships exclusively via Sagawa Express. Any alternative shipping method requires separate handling through another shipping provider.
Pre-Order & Special-Order Items
Estimated delivery times are shown on each product page or the manufacturer's product page.
These delivery estimates are not guaranteed. Delays may occur if the manufacturer is unable to process our order promptly, if an item is temporarily out of stock, or due to shipping or transportation issues.
We recommend placing your order well in advance, as delivery may take 2–3 weeks longer than the estimated timeframe.
We do our best to post regular progress updates on our Instagram Stories. Once new information is confirmed, we will also update the page below with the latest delivery information.
For the latest shipping and delivery updates, please also check the page below.
Do You Support Multiple Languages?
Yes. Our website is available in English and Japanese, and many pages are also available in other languages through machine translation. Please feel free to browse the site in your native language.
Do You Offer Gift Wrapping?
We're sorry, but we do not currently offer gift wrapping.
Although our company is based in the United States, all orders are fulfilled through our partner warehouse in Japan, where our staff are not based. As a result, we are unable to accommodate special packaging or other special handling requests.
What Is Your Return Policy?
We accept returns only for defective products purchased from our website. Please contact us before returning any item. Once your return request has been approved, please send the item back within 7 days of receiving it. For international returns, customers may be responsible for the return shipping costs.
Our company, staff, and warehouse are all located in Japan, and all returns, refunds, and exchanges are handled in accordance with Japanese law. Please note that our policies may differ from the practices in your country. Unless we determine that the item is defective, we generally do not accept returns, refunds, or exchanges. For complete details, please refer to our Return Policy.
Is Your Information Scientifically Supported?
Research on avian nutrition is still relatively limited compared with research on other animals, such as dogs and cats, and much of the available research has been conducted on poultry. As a result, not every aspect of companion bird nutrition and care is fully supported by peer-reviewed avian studies alone.
For this reason, we rely not only on avian research but also on human nutrition studies, animal research, observational data, and the knowledge of researchers and avian professionals across multiple fields to provide balanced, evidence-informed information.
Many scientific studies are published in the context of human health. However, a large proportion of this research is conducted using animal models. This is where the scientific concept of extrapolation becomes important. Extrapolation is a widely accepted scientific approach, and simply dismissing a study because "it was only done in mice" does not reflect how scientific evidence is evaluated.
For example, if a substance is shown to affect the liver in mice, researchers may investigate whether similar effects could occur in other animal species. This approach is widely used in medicine, nutrition, and many other scientific fields.
Of course, different species have different physiology and nutritional requirements, so research findings cannot always be applied directly to birds. For that reason, we do not rely on any single study or opinion. Instead, we consider multiple scientific studies together with the views of experienced professionals when presenting information.
Some studies highlight the benefits of certain foods or nutrients, while others discuss potential risks or limitations. Rather than promoting a single viewpoint, our goal is to provide a wide range of reliable information so that bird owners can make informed decisions based on their own circumstances.
Many of our product pages also include detailed FAQs with additional scientific information, so we encourage you to review those as well.
How Can I Contact You?

Because we can only communicate through written messages, we sincerely hope that all interactions remain respectful and considerate.
Please refrain from sending unsolicited sales pitches, marketing proposals, or other unrelated business inquiries. We do not respond to these types of messages.
I Haven't Received a Reply to My Inquiry
We appreciate your understanding that we may not be able to respond to every inquiry. We want to be transparent about this in advance so that customers know what to expect.
Every day, we receive a large number of inquiries about bird diets, our products, and restock schedules. Since expanding our multilingual support, we've also begun receiving messages from bird owners around the world, making it difficult for our small team to respond to every inquiry.
If you have an issue with your order—such as receiving a damaged, defective, or incorrect item—please reply directly to your order confirmation email. We always respond to order-related issues, wholesale inquiries, and other business-related matters.
For general bird care questions and other non-order-related inquiries, we may not be able to respond. Before contacting us, we encourage you to review our FAQ. If you still can't find the information you need, please contact us via Instagram DM or reach out to the product manufacturer directly.
If you notice any awkward translations or unclear wording on our website, please refer to the English version, which contains the most accurate information.
We do our best to respond to Instagram comments and DMs within one week whenever possible. Please note that we only reply to DMs from our Instagram followers and do not respond to messages from non-followers.
Business Hours
Our business hours are as follows:
Japan Standard Time (JST): Tuesday–Friday, 12:00 AM–6:00 AM. Closed Saturday through Monday. Orders begin shipping on Tuesdays.
Is PEGO an Expert?
We specialize in bird diets and nutrition. However, as of the end of 2025, our staff do not hold professional certifications or academic degrees in this field.
The information we provide is not based on personal opinions. Instead, it is carefully compiled and translated from reliable sources, including avian professionals in North America and Europe, peer-reviewed research, academic publications, and educational materials provided by manufacturers.
Our goal is to make reliable professional information more accessible by translating and organizing it for bird owners around the world.
Why Do You Recommend Whole Foods? Are Pellets Bad?
For more details, please see our “About Us” page.
What Is the Members-Only Website?
For Customers Outside Japan
At this time, our members-only website is available only in Japanese. We hope to offer multilingual versions in the future, but due to our limited time and resources, they are not yet available.
Like this website, all pages on the members-only site are protected against copying and screenshots. As a result, the site may not be very useful for those who cannot read Japanese.
The first additional languages we plan to offer will be English, followed by the languages spoken in countries where we receive the most engagement on Instagram. If you'd like to help us expand into your language, we'd greatly appreciate it if you could share our Instagram account with your friends.
Once multilingual support is ready, we plan to expand our services internationally. Until then, we kindly ask our customers outside Japan for their patience. Please note that we are unable to respond to individual inquiries regarding the launch date of multilingual support.
Our mission is to make reliable bird care information from North America and Europe more accessible—especially for bird owners in Asia who may have limited access to these resources because of language barriers.
By providing a wide range of educational information, we hope to help bird owners make informed choices and improve the lives of their beloved birds.
Is ___ Safe for Birds? / Can I Feed It to My Bird?
Every ingredient we use has been carefully reviewed for safety before being included in our products. We do not sell any ingredient that we believe to be unsafe.
Please note that opinions regarding the safety and recommended use of certain ingredients may vary depending on the country, region, or expert. Our recommendations are based primarily on standards and guidance from North America and Europe, including information from avian nutrition experts, avian veterinarians, and other bird specialists. We use ingredients that are widely regarded as safe for companion birds in these regions.
Some ingredients used in our products may not be recommended in your country or region. If you have any concerns, we recommend either refraining from purchasing the product or consulting a professional with expertise in avian nutrition rather than relying solely on information found online. We also encourage you to research the reasons and scientific evidence behind any differing recommendations before making your decision.
Please also note that certain ingredients may not be suitable for every bird species or may require special feeding precautions. We encourage you to review the product page carefully before making a purchase.
---
Mushrooms: Edible mushrooms intended for human consumption can be safely fed to birds, and we recommend including them as part of a balanced diet. Because birds digest mushrooms differently from humans, we recommend offering them raw rather than cooked. Numerous observations have documented companion bird species foraging on mushrooms in the wild.
In the past, mushrooms were often discouraged for birds, even in the United States. One commonly cited explanation is that the original warning was "Do not feed birds poisonous mushrooms." Over time, the word "poisonous" was omitted through repeated retelling, leading to the misconception that "birds should not be fed mushrooms."
Today, many avian nutrition experts and avian veterinarians in North America and Europe recommend including edible mushrooms in the diets of companion birds. Mushrooms are also widely used in poultry nutrition research and commercial poultry feeds. For example, Christal Pollock, DVM, an avian veterinarian with Lafeber, states:
"Mushrooms are occasionally included on toxic-food lists. There are a few toxic mushroom varieties; however, mushrooms that can be eaten by people are also considered safe for pets."
Many bird owners, avian professionals, and veterinarians outside Japan recommend feeding edible mushrooms to companion birds. In addition, numerous poultry studies have demonstrated their safety and potential health benefits. Because the safety of many companion bird foods—including pellets and nutritional supplements—is based in part on poultry research, mushrooms should not be treated differently when evaluating their safety for parrots.
For more information about the benefits of feeding mushrooms to birds, please click here.
Based on the scientific literature and professional resources we have reviewed, we are not aware of any peer-reviewed research from North America or Europe, or any published statements from recognized avian professionals, concluding that edible mushrooms should not be fed to companion birds.
If you are aware of peer-reviewed research demonstrating that edible mushrooms are harmful to birds, or of well-documented case reports involving multiple birds, we would sincerely appreciate you sharing that information with us. We will carefully review the evidence and, if appropriate, consult with avian professionals and researchers for further evaluation.
About Seeds and Stems in Our Products
They are safe for birds. Some of our freeze-dried products contain fruit seeds and vegetable stems and tops, which are intentionally left in the blend rather than removed.
The seeds found in our fruit and vegetable blends are safe for birds. We often receive questions about the cyanogenic compounds naturally present in apple seeds, but the small amounts found in our products are not considered harmful.
In the past, apple seeds were sometimes described as toxic to parrots. However, our understanding of avian nutrition has advanced considerably over the years. The small quantities of edible fruit and vegetable seeds included in our products are not considered harmful to companion birds when fed as part of a normal diet. Many wild bird species are also observed eating these seeds.
It is important to distinguish between seeds and pits (stones), as they are not the same.
Seeds: Small seeds found in fruits such as apples, strawberries, kiwis, and figs.
Pits (stones): The large, hard pits found in fruits such as peaches, apricots, cherries, and avocados.
In Japanese, both are commonly translated as tane ("seed"), which can sometimes cause confusion. Our products do not contain pits or stones.
Of course, we are not suggesting that birds should intentionally consume cyanogenic compounds. However, the small quantities of edible seeds included in our products, such as apple seeds, are not considered harmful to companion birds. For this reason, apple seeds and similar edible seeds may be included in our blends.
If you have any concerns, you are welcome to remove them before feeding. Likewise, the small seeds naturally found in strawberries, kiwis, figs, and similar fruits are generally regarded as safe for companion birds.
As for stems and tops, people often discard these parts, but they are not generally considered harmful to birds. They are thoroughly washed before processing, so we do not consider them a safety concern. They are not parts we specifically recommend feeding, but we intentionally leave them in our products rather than removing them. If you have any concerns, you are welcome to remove them before feeding.
The same principle applies to fruit and vegetable peels. We are often asked whether apples should always be peeled before being fed to birds, or whether pomegranate or banana peels should be avoided. If your bird mainly eats the peel rather than the edible portion of the fruit, we recommend removing the peel. However, if your bird is primarily eating the flesh and only consumes a small amount of peel, we do not consider this to be a problem. Allowing birds to peel food themselves can also encourage natural foraging behavior and provide environmental enrichment.
In the wild, birds often cannot reach the edible portion of fruits and vegetables without first breaking through or eating the peel. Many species naturally consume at least part of the peel as part of their normal feeding behavior.
All produce used in our products is washed with apple cider vinegar or baking soda and then thoroughly rinsed under running water before processing.
The Japanese Sounds Unnatural.
All language versions of this website are created using translation tools, so some wording may sound unnatural. We do our best to make sure the meaning is clear, and we appreciate your understanding.
Why Are So Many Items Out of Stock?
Interest in whole foods is growing rapidly, and demand in Japan has increased significantly. Although we import as much as possible, many of our most popular products continue to sell out, and demand currently exceeds supply.
If you register for a free account, you'll receive priority notifications when products are restocked.
You can also use our special-order request form here.
When Will ___ Be Back in Stock?
You can find our latest restock information here. If an item is not listed, we currently have no plans to restock it.
For pre-order and special-order items, estimated delivery times are also provided on the product page. Please check both the product page and the restock page, as you'll usually find the information you're looking for there.
You can also use our special-order request form here.
Can You Combine My Orders and Refund the Duplicate Shipping Fee?
We often receive requests such as, “I forgot to add something after placing my order, so I would like to place an additional order. Can you combine the shipments and refund the duplicate shipping fee?”
If the request is made during PEGO business hours and within 60–120 minutes of the first order, we may be able to accommodate it.
However, as a general rule, we do not accept combined-shipping requests. Shipping is managed separately between our outsourced warehouse and our shop. Once an order is placed, instructions are automatically sent to the warehouse and packing begins, even if the order has not yet shipped.
Do You Have a Physical Store or Attend Events?
No. We currently operate exclusively as an online store. Since our staff are based in the United States, we do not currently have plans to exhibit at or attend events in Asia.
If you would like to use our educational content for an event, seminar, workshop, or other educational activity, or if you would like us to speak at your event, please feel free to contact us.
Some materials are available free of charge, while others are offered under a paid license. We can also develop customized educational content and seminars tailored to your topic, audience, and language. These services are available in multiple languages.
Do You Have Plans for Instagram Live?
We do not have a fixed schedule. Our Instagram Lives are generally spontaneous and may happen without advance notice. We try to notify full members of our members-only website in advance whenever possible. If the timing works for you, we would love for you to join us. Since almost all participants are Japanese, our live streams are conducted in Japanese only.
Do You Have Recommendations by Bird Species?
Yes. Different bird species have different natural diets and nutritional needs.
When choosing the best diet for your bird, we recommend first learning about the species' natural habitat and what it eats in the wild. We also offer seminars that explain dietary differences among bird species, which you may find helpful.
However, a bird's ideal diet is not determined by species alone. Many factors influence nutritional needs and overall health, including its current diet, activity level, access to natural sunlight and bathing, time spent outside the cage, sleep schedule, whether it lives alone or with other birds, and even the types of perches it uses. For this reason, we cannot simply say, "This is the correct diet for this species."
Avian nutrition is still an evolving field, and the ideal diet has not yet been scientifically established for every bird species.
Rather than relying on a single food, such as pellets, we recommend offering a variety of species-appropriate whole foods so birds can obtain nutrients from a diverse range of natural ingredients. A varied diet not only provides a broader range of nutrients but also encourages natural foraging behavior and supports environmental enrichment.
We encourage you to observe your bird carefully and choose the feeding approach that best suits its individual needs.
About Donations
A portion of our sales is donated to organizations in the United States and Europe.
When you purchase Biodiversity Bird Blends, a portion of the proceeds supports Saint Xavier University's Animal Nutrition Lab and the Avian Preservation & Education Conservancy.
We also run occasional fundraising campaigns to support wildlife conservation organizations in the United States, as well as organizations dedicated to avian nutrition research.
Contacting Manufacturers Directly
As a general rule, if you have questions about products that are available exclusively through our store, please contact us first.
For some manufacturers, we serve as their official point of contact for customers in Asia. As a result, if customers contact these manufacturers directly, the details of their inquiries may also be shared with us.
To avoid duplicate communication, we would appreciate it if you contacted us first. We can assist you in Japanese and, depending on the nature of your inquiry, either contact the manufacturer on your behalf or advise you to contact them directly if necessary.
Personal Imports
If an item is temporarily out of stock and you need it urgently, please contact us before attempting to purchase it directly from the manufacturer or import it yourself.
Customers whose orders or transactions have previously been declined by our store, including those involving inappropriate or disruptive behavior, are asked not to contact our manufacturers directly.
For many of our products, we work closely with manufacturers to meet Japan's import requirements, including adjusting ingredients for the Japanese market, complying with plant quarantine regulations, and obtaining Phytosanitary Certificates. Some products are specially prepared for the Japanese market and may not be available for personal import or direct international sales.
In particular, Biodiversity Bird Blends is available in Asia exclusively through our store. Customers in Asia cannot purchase these products directly from the manufacturer.
Can I Use These Products Together with Supplements or Medication?
Because our products are whole foods, they can generally be used alongside supplements or medications without causing any issues with the whole foods themselves (with the exception of citrus fruits).
However, we cannot determine whether a medication or supplement may interact with our products.
For this reason, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of the medication or supplement first. Be sure to provide your bird's species, age, health condition, frequency of use, and any other relevant information, and ask whether there are any concerns about using their product together with our whole foods.
We also recommend sharing the manufacturer's response with your avian veterinarian so they can evaluate it in the context of your bird's health and treatment plan.
Veterinarians may not be familiar with the ingredients or manufacturing methods of every supplement or medication. The manufacturer knows its own product best and can provide the most accurate product-specific information. Your avian veterinarian can then consider that information together with your bird's health condition and treatment plan to provide the most appropriate advice.
We recommend relying on both the manufacturer's expertise and your veterinarian's professional judgment when deciding whether to use these products together.
About Herbs
For information on how to use and handle herbs, please visit this page.
If you have any questions about Biodiversity Bird Blends, please refer to the product page or the information available here.
In Japan, the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (formerly the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act) strictly regulates claims about herbs. For this reason, as a general rule, we do not answer questions regarding their effects, benefits, or use. We appreciate your understanding.
Product Details: How to Feed and Other Information
All essential product information is provided on each product page.
Please refer to the product page first for details such as the product description, suitable bird species, feeding instructions, recommended feeding amount, storage instructions, ingredients, nutritional information, expiration date, and precautions.
If certain information is not included on the product page, it may be because we are unable to provide it due to legal restrictions, including Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (formerly the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act), or import-related requirements. We appreciate your understanding.
Requests to Restock Previous Products
We often receive requests from customers who would like to purchase products we previously offered. However, as a general rule, we do not bring back the exact same original PEGO products.
This is because we want birds to experience a wider variety of ingredients and ingredient combinations, helping to promote a more diverse diet.
If there is a product you are interested in, we recommend purchasing it while it is still available.
We also receive requests such as, “It doesn't have to be exactly the same—I’d just like something similar.” In many cases, we already offer a comparable product in our current lineup. If you're looking for a similar product, feel free to contact us via Instagram DM, and we'll be happy to recommend one.
In particular, we've received many requests to bring back our original powdered food. However, we now offer the powdered food available here, which we believe is an even better choice than our original formula. For that reason, we have discontinued the original product.
About Foreign Material and Insect Contamination
Many of the products we carry are pesticide-free, additive-free whole foods that are minimally processed to preserve their natural state. Because of this, small insects, plant material, or other natural materials may occasionally be present.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) establishes Defect Action Levels for naturally occurring insects in food. In other words, the presence of a very small number of insects is considered acceptable within established limits. These limits vary depending on the type of food and how it is processed. Because our products are pesticide-free and contain no artificial additives, the occasional presence of naturally occurring insects is possible.
Small insects naturally found on whole foods are also a source of animal protein for birds. Therefore, insects found on vegetables, fruits, herbs, and similar ingredients are generally safe for birds. If you prefer, you may simply remove them before feeding.
Please note that we cannot accept returns or exchanges due to naturally occurring materials, such as insects or plant matter.
---------
About Foreign Material
The following statement is provided by one of our manufacturers:
"Agricultural products that undergo minimal processing may occasionally contain naturally occurring foreign material. This is especially common with herbs and seeds.
Our quality standards allow for less than 2% inorganic material and up to 4% naturally occurring material.
Our ingredients are sourced in bulk from farms around the world. Although we take great care during packaging, small stones, feathers, tiny insects, plant material, and, on rare occasions, small pieces of packaging materials may be present.
Because these are natural agricultural products, it is impossible to eliminate such materials completely. We appreciate your understanding."
---------
The following statement is provided by Biodiversity Bird Blends regarding foreign material found in its herbal products:
"Most of our ingredients are shipped to us in large food-grade plastic bags. If pieces of plastic or similar materials are found, we do our best to remove them whenever possible. We recommend removing them if you find them, but they are not harmful to birds.
The plastic, paper, or small wood fragments that may occasionally be present are made from the same food-grade materials used in our product packaging, and we consider them safe for use with birds. There is no need for concern."
---------
Our Policy on Foreign Material
Before offering products for sale, we confirm the quality standards and foreign material policies of nearly all the manufacturers we work with.
Most manufacturers have informed us that naturally occurring foreign material or very small amounts of contamination are not considered grounds for returns or exchanges.
Please note that quality standards and expectations for food and pet food may differ between Japan and the United States. Most of the products we sell are manufactured in the United States and are produced according to each manufacturer's quality standards.
However, if you find hazardous foreign objects such as broken glass, metal fragments, or blade fragments that could pose a safety risk, please contact us immediately. We will report the issue to the manufacturer and respond promptly.
Some of the products we sell are human food products that we offer for companion birds. If you find foreign material in one of these products, please contact the manufacturer listed on the package directly.
If you find naturally occurring materials such as paper or wood fragments, you may remove them before feeding if you prefer. If the amount is minimal and does not concern you, we consider the product safe to use as provided.
Is Content Available in My Native Language?
Our goal is to support as many languages as possible whenever there is enough interest. However, producing multilingual videos and educational content requires significant time and resources, including translation, video editing, subtitle creation, and quality review. As a small team, we are currently unable to produce content in a language requested by only a small number of people.
For seminars, social media posts, and other educational content, we generally begin producing a new language version once we receive interest from around 20 users of that language.
If there is a seminar you would like to see in your language, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word by sharing or reposting it on Instagram or recommending it to your friends.
Since introducing multilingual support, we have received inquiries from bird owners in many countries and regions, including South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Poland, Sweden, and Finland.
Our goal is to make the latest avian education and bird care information from North America and Europe accessible to people who may not have easy access to English-language resources. We will continue expanding our multilingual content gradually so that more bird lovers around the world can benefit from reliable educational resources.
Wholesale
Most of the products we carry are available for wholesale.
Wholesale pricing depends on the products you are interested in, your order quantities, and current exchange rates. Simply let us know which products and quantities you need, and we will be happy to prepare a customized quote.
We can ship wholesale orders from either Japan or the United States.
Seminars and Educational Resources
Because our staff are based in the United States, we are generally unable to attend events in Asia in person.
However, if you would like to use our educational resources for an event, seminar, workshop, social media, or other educational activities, we are happy to make selected materials available.
Depending on your project, we can also create original educational content tailored to your topic and present it in your preferred language.
If you send us your questions in advance, we can also prepare written answers for use during your presentation or event.
Some resources are available free of charge, while others are available for purchase. Please let us know which materials you are interested in, your preferred language, budget, topic, desired video length, and deadline, and we will be happy to discuss the available options.
We are a small team, but we always do our best to accommodate individual requests whenever possible. If you have an idea or project in mind, please feel free to contact us.
